Guests
Guests is the home recording project of Jessica Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine. Vaguely named as such to avoid any problems with the poster if they pull out of a gig (which has only happened once, to be fair) but also to capture a sense of reverse hospitality, like what happens when private worlds meet each other, making or having been made a space for. Their debut record, “I wish I was special” (World of Echo, 2024) was variously described as “a collage of concrète experiments and outerzone pop gestures, music that sounds as if it’s been written from the depths of a dream”; “music for people who love music but also hate it too”. Their upcoming LP Common Domestic Bird (also released by World of Echo this April) continues in this vein, layering synthesiser, keyboards and samples over rudimentary drum rhythms and field recordings, which are in turn sung or spoken with to create nine new songs.

Fish El Fish
Fish El Fish is the new project of Syed Kamran Ali, formerly of Hunter Gracchus and Harappian Night Recordings. 2024 release Dog in Dracula Fangs is one of the most curiously delightful albums of the last couple of years: unsettling one minute, disarming the next and peppered throughout with a semi-intelligible mystical dialogue and drumbeats that could have been recorded through a mattress. Anybody who saw Hunter Gracchus live will remember how gleefully chaotic their performances could be while always being underpinned by what appeared to be a shared understanding and trust; I always understood them as celebrations of collaboration and communality. It is perhaps unsurprising then that Kamran will be joined by his former bandmate John Marshall for the performance.
